The SCBook Festival is pleased to announce that New York Times best-selling writer Pat Conroy and Catherine Seltzer, author of the newly published Understanding Pat Conroy, will appear at a special SCBook Festival Preview Event on Tuesday, May 12, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. in Columbia, SC. The event will be a revealing conversation of the autobiographical and creative impulses that drive Conroy’s writing life and is presented by the SCBook Festival in partnership with the University of South Carolina Press.
Conroy, the author of iconic Southern literature such as The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of Tides, and most recently the memoir The Death of Santini, often uses his own life as inspiration for his work. Seltzer will discuss with Conroy his influences and inspirations, what role region, race, or gender play in his writing; and the future of literature in a digital age. Understanding Pat Conroy is the first book-length study of his writing life and is published by the University of South Carolina Press in its long-running Understanding Contemporary American Literature series.
“Pat Conroy is the only writer I know who is as passionate about rage as he is about tenderness, and that is what Catherine Seltzer’s profoundly insightful book tells us.”—Terry Kay
“Understanding Pat Conroy is full of intelligence and insights that will deepen any reader’s comprehension and appreciation of Conroy’s works.”—Katherine Clark
